General (Senior) Manager, Corporate Communications (Internal Communications)


Position Summary

JetBlue is looking for a General Manager of Internal Communications to lead a team of internal communicators who work every day to inspire and inform JetBlue’s frontline Crewmembers. The General Manager will manage efforts across the team to develop communications strategies and execute programs that build awareness and buy-in for the airline’s mission, values, and strategy; support positioning efforts JetBlue leaders; communicate the airline’s operating philosophy and day-to-day operational initiatives; identify content development opportunities for the frontline internal communications team; spark new ideas that support Crewmember communications; and integrate efforts across all channels to advance JetBlue’s reputation with all internal and external audiences in collaboration with the Corporate Communications team. The General Manager reports to the Chief Communications Officer.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop a team of communications professionals responsible for internal communications to JetBlue’s frontline Crewmembers
  • Facilitate strategic internal communications plans for various JetBlue operational and customer-facing teams, including Pilots, Inflight (flight attendants), Airports, Tech Ops, System Operations, and Customer Support
  • Help build alignment within workgroups through communications for JetBlue mission, vision, values and strategy; cross-functional initiatives; corporate social responsibility and sustainability efforts
  • Support JetBlue leader communications within operational teams, as well as thought leadership opportunities internally and externally
  • Oversee internal events for Crewmembers and leaders, including town hall meetings and internal conferences
  • Create and oversee actionable feedback channels to assess crewmember sentiment and communication program effectiveness
  • Identify good news stories and initiatives to support JetBlue’s larger narrative for both internal and external audiences
  • Support channel strategy for internal communications including strategic content plans for JetBlue’s Crewmember mobile app
  • Collaborate across the Corporate Communications team, including the intranet team, creative team, executive communications, and functional communications
  • Work with JetBlue People (human resources) team to promote JetBlue’s culture and engagement, as well labor relations and Crewmember representative groups under the direct relationship
  • Collaborate with reputation management, media relations, and social media teams to ensure integrated storytelling and content development to get the most from communications efforts
  • Assist in crisis communication, after-hours media relations, and other communications responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Communications Officer
  • Take a significant role in the development of Crewmembers to support their engagement, growth, and goal achievement
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or relevant area of study; OR demonstrated capability to perform job responsibilities with a High School Diploma/GED and at least four (4) years of previous relevant experience
  • Six (6) years communications experience for mission-driven organizations, major brands, or companies with diversified field employees
  • Previous project management experience
  • Able to demonstrate critical thinking and communication skills through a work sample task
  • Strong team orientation and interpersonal skills; collaborative approach across functions and teams
  • Motivated self-starter, demonstrates attention to detail within a fast-paced environment
  • Comfort in working directly with Senior Leadership and functional teams
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be available for emergency response on short notice for unplanned events, including incident and crisis response
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (PowerPoint, Outlook, Word)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to meet multiple and/or tight deadlines
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Available for occasional overnight travel as needed (15%)
  • In possession of valid travel documents and the ability to travel in and out of the United States
  • Must pass a ten (10) year background check and pre-employment drug test
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located
  • Authorization to work in the US is required, this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience managing communications for a distributed, geographically diverse workforce of frontline employees
  • Experience in merger/integration communications
  • Experience in change management and mission, vision, values communications
  • Experience working in a public relations or communications agency
  • Reputation management, media relations, social media or external communications experience

Crewmember Expectations:

  • Regular attendance and punctuality
  • Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short-notice
  • Able to maintain a professional appearance
  • When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft
  • Must be an appropriate organizational fit for the JetBlue culture, that is, exhibit the JetBlue values of Safety, Caring, Integrity, Passion and Fun
  • Must fulfill safety accountabilities as prescribed by JetBlue’s Safety Management System
  • Promote JetBlue’s #1 value of safety as a Safety Ambassador, supporting JetBlue’s Safety Management System (SMS) components, Safety Policy, and behavioral standards
  • Identify safety and/or security concerns, issues, incidents or hazards that should be reported and report them whenever possible and by any means necessary including JetBlue’s confidential reporting systems (Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) and Safety Action Report (SAR))
  • Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls 
  • Uphold JetBlue’s safety performance metric goals and understand how they relate to their duties and responsibilities
