Position Title: Investigator Ground Safety ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Position Summary

The Ground Safety Investigator (GSI) conducts investigations of ground safety-related events (i.e. accidents, incidents and safety occurrences) that occur during airline ground operations using data-driven systems, based largely upon scientific principles and operational knowledge. The GSI will also track and trend relevant ground safety events, and track recommendation and corrective actions resulting from safety investigations.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed investigations of accidents, incidents, significant events, and other ground safety issues such as those derived through trend analysis
  • Acquire, analyze, and present information gained through on-site investigation, independent reading, interviews with witnesses, discussions with subject-matter specialists, or others through appropriate methods
  • Collect flight data and other information in support of event investigation procedures
  • Prepare investigation reports that include the facts, analysis, conclusions, findings and recommendations associated with an event
  • Collects and analyzes safety event data to raise awareness of operational risks, and assists in the coordination of corrective actions with operating departments to facilitate actions to mitigate those risks
  • Notifies the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and key management personnel of significant events
  • Perform or support the management and analysis of various sources of safety data, including Crewmember reports of operational events and safety issues, and data generated from internal safety programs across safety functional areas
  • Provide reports on ground safety trends identified by data collection efforts
  • Participate in airline industry safety conferences, groups, and associations to include domestic and international travel
  • Ensure adherence to all Safety and Security regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • One (1) year of experience in aviation operations (FAA Certificated Pilot, A&P, Dispatcher) or relevant work experience at a Part 121 Carrier, aircraft original equipment manufacturer (OEM), or in the military
  • Ability to acquire, analyze, and present information gained through on-site investigation, independent reading, interviews with witnesses, discussions with subject-matter specialists, or others through appropriate methods
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate with various levels of management, external business partners, and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to work under stress in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
  • In possession of valid travel documents with the ability to travel in and out of the United States
  • Available for occasional overnight travel (15%)
  • Must pass a ten (10) year background check and pre-employment drug test
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in aviation, safety, airline/airport operations, or a related field 
  • One (1) year of experience in an aviation safety role with good knowledge of safety principles, ground operations, data analysis, and/or safety investigations
  • Prior experience in a 14 CFR Part 121 Safety Investigations program or in one or more of the FAA’s Voluntary Flight Safety Programs such as FOQA, ASAP, FRMS; or an equivalent safety reporting program required as part of an approved SMS; or the equivalent military experience
  • Ground handling and operations knowledge or experience on Airbus 320 (A320), Airbus 220 (A220) or Embraer 190 (E190) aircraft types
  • Formal safety and/or accident investigation training
  • Working knowledge of the regulations and standards governing commercial aviation (ICAO, EASA, FAA, NTSB, IOSA)
  • Working knowledge of regulations and standards governing commercial aviation ground operations and Crewmember safety  (FAA, EASA, OSHA)
  • Working knowledge of Safety Management System (SMS) principals and application either in direct work experience or via higher education
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to conduct or support data and/or statistical analyses to provide meaningful and actionable insight that improve JetBlue’s safety performance

  • Able to maintain a professional appearance
  • Must be available to respond on short-notice and during flexible hours
  • When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft

  • Must fulfill safety accountabilities as prescribed by JetBlue’s Safety Management System
  • Promote JetBlue’s #1 value of safety as a Safety Ambassador, supporting JetBlue’s Safety Management System (SMS) components, Safety Policy and behavioral standards
  • Identify safety and/or security concerns, issues, incidents or hazards that should be reported and report them whenever possible and by any means necessary including JetBlue’s confidential reporting systems (Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) or Safety Action Report(SAR))
  • Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls
  • Uphold JetBlue’s safety performance metric goals and understand how they relate to their duties and responsibilities

Equipment

  • Computer and other office equipment
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by Company and/or airport policies when working on the airport ramp or other airport facilities (ex. reflective vest, safety shoes, hearing and/or eye protection)

Work Environment

  • Ability to work flexible hours and maintain an “on-call” status during off duty hours for screening safety related events and initiating investigations
  • Ability to travel occasionally to various airport facilities, and work on and around aircraft
  • Normal Office/Airport environment
  • Subject to weather and elevated noise levels within airports
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time

Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort required by handling objects up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  (Light)
