Position Summary

The Director of Application Architecture and Development is responsible for managing the various JetBlue applications and solution architecture. The software portfolio includes both custom and package applications that employ cutting edge technologies and practices to JetBlue’s business units (Operations, Revenue and Support). Work within DevOps and Agile based teams of Solution Architects, Infrastructure and Application Engineering Development Teams driving overall direction for our customer experience.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • In this position you will oversee 15+ teams of engineers and to ship a product ranging from digital and ecommerce systems to applications that our staff use internally.
  • Lead digital transformation of JetBlue, across talent, platform/systems, and products. Deprecate tech debt and modernize the platforms.
  • Develop and maintain technology solutions and processes that will enable organization to scale, innovate, improve member and staff experience, and operate efficiently and effectively.
  • Leading Architecture team, own architecture, delivery, and sustaining activities of all technical initiatives including front-end user facing technologies and back-end operational technologies
  • Redesign processes and building the digital solutions and infrastructure to enable staff to do their work with members and each other better, faster in scalable ways.
  • Empower and inspire staff and members through education and the demonstration of impactful technology-driven solutions.
  • Manage the maintenance and development of all JetBlue applications
  • Act as first point of contact for senior leadership regarding all JetBlue Applications
  • Guide business units in the development of application strategy and establish policies and procedures for developing and supporting all applications
  • Approve contracts and negotiate pricing with business partners
  • Enable the business by defining high-priority projects which support JetBlue’s business objectives, and which leverage the technologies and systems composing JetBlue’s technology vision
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and motivate a team of highly talented Engineers.
  • Take a significant role in the development of crewmembers to support the engagement, growth, goal achievement
  • Actively prioritize and manage a portfolio of approximately 100 projects per year
  • Understand the impact of each project, available resources, and external drivers to appropriately prioritize and assign projects
  • Follow up and report out on project goals
  • Work in collaboration with all organization teams to identify opportunities for improve processes and innovate
  • Ensure the tech products are appropriately adopted, and improved with teams’ input to deliver on organization’s mission
  • Understanding & hands on knowledge of docker, cloud-computing / cloud-services platforms (e.g. AWS or azure)
  • Work with architecture and product managers to determine solutions to reduce the risk profile of critical products by addressing critical vulnerabilities and legacy technologies.
  • Active involvement in day-to-day team activities and being a hands-on resource on the team

 

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science; OR demonstrated capability to perform job responsibilities with a High School Diploma/GED and at least four (4) years of previous experience
  • Seven (7) years of experience leading agile Engineering and DevOps Teams
  • Seven (7) years of full stack development experience (hands on) in Java, Spring boot, Angular, REACT, Web Services (REST)
  • Experience being a technical lead to help build and lead a team to deliver various new products as well as modernization related initiatives
  • Experience with industry standards in project management and development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe etc.)
  • Knowledge of modern application development practices and standards
  • Ability to strategically think about business initiatives with an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Create a high-performance engineering culture focused on accountability and results
  • Available for occasional overnight travel (20%)
  • In possession of valid travel documents with the ability to travel in and out of the United States
  • Pass a ten (10) year background check and pre-employment drug test 
  • Legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located
  • Authorization to work in the US is required. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

 

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Masters in Computer Science
  • Experience in large scale modern cloud-based application implementations
  • Experience tackling tough issues, working across lines of difference, and creating inclusive environment to develop equitable practices
  • Proven ability to engage others in a compelling, persuasive manner and build relationships around shared interest and beliefs
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as interpersonal skills, with an appreciation for confidentiality
  • Ability to motivate and positively engage staff and management in ways that build trust and enthusiasm

  • Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short-notice
  • Able to maintain a professional appearance
  • When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft

  • Must fulfill safety accountabilities as prescribed by JetBlue’s Safety Management System

  • Identify safety concerns, issues, incidents or hazards that should be reported and report them whenever possible and by any means necessary including JetBlue’s confidential reporting systems (Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) or Safety Action Report(SAR))
  • Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls
  • Uphold JetBlue’s safety performance metric goals and understand how they relate to their duties and responsibilities
