Position Summary

The Senior Engineer Avionics reports to the Manager Avionics Engineering and is responsible for technical accuracy and reliability of the Avionics and Electrical systems/components.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Reviews and actions Airworthiness Directives (AD) so as to ensure compliance with applicable regulations; verifies that the Maintenance Program is amended to reflect adherence to these technical requirements
  • Reviews Service Bulletins, Service Letters, etc. for applicability and system reliability and/or economic benefits; takes action as required to incorporate applicable changes that are determined to provide benefits in accordance with airline/departmental objectives
  • Responsible for the understanding, periodic review, implementation, update and currency of the Avionics and Electrical systems/components portion of the Maintenance Program
  • Conducts root cause analysis for Avionics and Electrical systems/component problems which may cause aircraft delays, cancellations, substantial expenditures in manpower or materials or interruptions in maintenance operations and initiates the action required to remedy any undesirable condition(s) detected
  • Develops technical data required for modifications/repairs of aircraft Avionics and Electrical systems and components. Obtains regulatory approval for modifications/repairs performed on JetBlue aircraft Avionics and Electrical systems and components
  • Initiates the action required to ensure that source documents affected by engineering actions are updated to reflect current data, configuration and accuracy
  • Develops customized procedures and special criteria for repairs, modifications, inspections, servicing and other maintenance actions, which are not adequately addressed in existing manuals
  • Prepares Engineering Controls to provide technical dispositions for repairs, modifications, inspection or other maintenance actions on Avionics and Electrical systems and components, which provide benefits in accordance with airline/departmental objectives
  • Evaluates new methods, materials and equipment, which may provide cost benefits and takes action to incorporate justified changes
  • Establishes build specifications for Aircraft Avionics and Electrical systems/components
  • Assists the Manager Avionics Engineering  with continued development of the Avionics Engineering processes
  • Assists the Manager Avionics Engineering with the day-to-day management and control of the Avionics Engineering process
  • Assists with training/mentoring less experienced Avionics Engineers
  • Represents Avionics Engineering at meetings as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering, with an avionics background including, but not limited to, Auto Flight, Communications, Electrical Power, Fire Detection, Fuel, Indicating/Recording, Lighting, Navigation, and Information Systems
  • Eight (8) years Engineering or technical experience
  • Three (3) years of diversified experience on transport category aircraft with the ability to work with and understand maintenance manuals, maintenance programs, and reliability programs
  • Knowledgeable background in aircraft electronics and avionics systems, power distribution, cabin electronics, cockpit instrumentation and navigation systems
  • Background in troubleshooting aircraft avionics and system problems
  • Experience in systems integration
  • Working knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) governing aircraft certification and maintenance
  • Must pass a ten (10) year background check and pre-employment drug test
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located
  • Depending upon location, may need to possess and maintain a valid Driver License and a driving record that meets JetBlue Airways’ insurance standards

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree Electrical, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering,
  • Valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplatnt Certificate
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Computer literate in Microsoft software such as Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Project
  • Prior Airbus/Boeing/Embraer experience
  • Reliability analysis skills to identify root cause of systems problems
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong analytical abilities
  • Able to communicate technical issues in an assertive and tactful manner
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to manage and coordinate several tasks and projects simultaneously

  • Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short-notice
  • Well-groomed and able to maintain a professional appearance
  • When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft

  • Identify safety concerns, issues, incidents or hazards that should be reported and report them whenever possible and by any means necessary including JetBlue’s confidential reporting systems (Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) or Safety Action Report(SAR))
  • Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls 
  • Uphold JetBlue’s safety performance metric goals and understanding how they relate to their duties and responsibilities
